Prof. Shinberg has been in practice as principal since achieving professional registration in 1975, following graduation from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh and work with the nationally noted firm of Arthur Cotton Moore + Associates. His projects, renderings and articles have appeared in local and national publications, including the AIA Journal which featured his drawing work.
In addition to many commercial and residential projects, Shinberg has become a specialist in designing public and private schools, religious facilities, and other institutional building types. As an urban school expert, he has been part of the award-winning Second Ward planning group in Charlotte, NC, and was recently a presenter at the Department of Education National Charter School Conference in Milwaukee.
He is principal in the firm of Shinberg.Levinas LLC, together with Salo Levinas. Their work has won numerous awards and includes both national and international projects.
Shinberg has taught in The Catholic University of America School of Architecture for nearly 30 years, as Adjunct Associate Professor since 1992, teaching a wide range of courses and helping to support the committee work load of the faculty.
While studying for his professional degree in architecture at Carnegie-Mellon University, Shinberg received the PPG Foundation Traveling Fellowship, which supported six months of self-directed study overseas, and was Finalist in the John Knox Shear Design Competition. He holds the Alpha Rho Chai medal, having been elected by the faculty to the national architectural honorary society in 1971.

Selected Professional Projects & Awards
The firm's recent and current projects include the Dance Institute of Washington, among a half-dozen institutional projects in the resurgent Columbia Heights neighborhood, The E.L. Haynes School, the D.C. Preparatory Academy, Georgetown Square, and a museum and commercial addition to an historic synagogue complex in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Other projects include Congregation B'nai Shalom, the M.A.Winter Building, which helped propel the resurgence of Washington's U Street corridor, the Johnson Avenue Lofts, the Chicago Botanical Garden, and Greenpeace USA National Headquarters. He has made presentations and submissions before numerous federal and state architectural and zoning review bodies and has lectured on architecture, education facilities, and, to composition students in The Catholic University of America School of Music, links between music and architecture.
He has been granted expert witness status in zoning hearings and civil actions.
