A place of Temenos. A hermitage is defined as a place, “simple in nature and design, created to provide a temenos (sacred space) for an individual to live alone for a short or extended time. In this temenos a person can withdraw into solitude and deeper communion with God at a soul’s own pace and schedule.”

Scope

In conjunction with CUAdc 12 Students in the CUA 2010 comprehensive design studio designed a single occupant rental residence on the property of the Franciscan Monastery in Washington DC. Our proposal planned capacity for the expansion to four Hermitage units. Each unit contains, a sleeping area, kitchenette, and bathroom with approximately 400-500 sf. The students design incorporated a sustainable site design, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems including the use of a ground source heat pump and natural ventilation. through the choice of materials the design was meant to integrate into the existing historic campus. The first Hermitage we designed and permitted will be ADA compliant.
